But Edward and Elizabeth’s magnificent court hides a dark secret, a deception that threatens the security of the English throne … and all who lust after it.
In 1483, with the untimely death of the King, Margaret finds herself at the heart of chain of events that threaten the supremacy of York, and will change England forever.

The Beaufort Woman One woman’s selfless struggle for the rights of her son.

First, I should say that Margaret Beaufort has not always been my favorite historical figure, but Judith Arnopp has made her character believable and almost engaging. I enjoyed Margaret coming to a comfortable place with Thomas Stanley, and her marriage, as well as her kindness and respect for both Elizabeth and Anne as queens and women.

I was able to envision her as a complicated person but for reasons that were understandable. I am convinced that she had decent relationships with her husbands, for the most part and always understood her obsession for her son Henry's heritage. It really is what she felt her life was about, that and being at court, which had was important to her. She was raised to respect her family heritage and her kinship.

I recommend it to others who enjoy Tudor and Plantagenet novels and history. I am waiting for this authors next novel. ( Hint; Peaceweaver is my favorite)

I love this novel. I was glad to find this collection because I love the War of Roses and all things Plantagenets/Tudor, but Philipa Gregory in the Red Queen did not do her any justice. I thought she played Margaret one sided and bitter. In this novel, I fell in love with Margaret. There is depth to each character that represents that no one is completely a sinner or a saint. Less time is wasted describing scenes and architecture, and more time on character building. I can't wait for the next book.
A woman to contend with Margaret Beaufort loved two husbands, lost them both to war, and for her son's safety hardly ever saw him ... married a third time, a marriage of convenience, and one which had her courting danger as the War of the Roses seemed to see saw between the two factions, as did her husband's loyalties, putting her in grave danger as the mother of the claimant to the throne.
Margaret put her faith to the test by catering to the Queen while her son Henry, along with Jasper Tudor stayed abroad while she endeavored, at great risk, to support those favoring her son's claim.
I really love this series. I have been interested in the life of Margaret Beaufort and didn't know much about her. These novels bring her to life for me. I can't wait for the next book!
Such a lot of research has gone into this book and Judith Arnopp really knows her stuff. So many characters woven into the tapestry of Margaret Beaufort's life. She had three husbands, but was unable to have any more children after the horrific birth of her only son (Henry V11) whilst still a child. Her dedication to Henry's safety, well-being and future prospects knew no bounds. She was utterly obsessed with her son. In those days the death of children was common and yet her only child escaped unscathed. Even though I have read a lot of English history, there were a number of things I didn't know. I had no idea she remained fond of her first husband Edmond Tudor, nor that she was estranged from her mother, that her second husband Harry, Lord Stafford was the love of her life or that she, Margaret arranged the marriage of her son to Elizabeth of York. That was the biggest surprise because I always believed Henry V11 devised that for himself as a way to amalgamate England into one again and finish the War of the Roses. Though very small in stature, Margaret was a feisty lady and if all in this book is true and not supposition, she was wonderfully active in the confines of her life as a woman.
This is a continuation of the story about Margaret Beaufort, the mother of Henry VIi of England, which began with The Beaufort Bride. Margaret is more mature in this story, as she finds a brief period of piece in her life during her marriage to Harry Stanford. Set in the tumultuous time of the ascendancy of Edward VI Plantagenet, the reader is drawn in by Margaret's first person account of the events, her loving marriage to Harry Stanford which ended In his premature death,, her eventual friendship with Elizabeth Woodville, Queen of England, despite herself, Not to mention the terrible back and forth of the battles and loyalties between the House of York and the House of Lancaster, which ultimately, almost miraculously propelled Margaret's son, Henry Tudor, to take up the crown of England. Margaret's voice is both Saint and sinner, committing treason, because she feels it will further the ambitions of her son Henry, but at the same time in confusion and pain about the fate of the little princes in the Tower, and later pain for Richard III's queen's premature death. Margaret Beaufort, or Margaret the King's Mother, as she styled herself, was a complicated and feisty woman. Once again Judith Arnopp has delivered, with a great read. Five stars!
